Wines of the Week: Bang for Your Buck Blends

If you’re always seeking out value when you shop for wine, then often times, you can get more bang for your buck choosing blends over varietal wines.  Here are four, available for $20 or less, which our panel scored 90 points.  Whether you enjoy white, rosé, or red our there is a wine for you.  Cheers!

Robert Mondavi 2017 Rye Barrel Aged Red Blend

Grape(s): Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, & Cabernet Franc

Region: Monterey County, Ca

Price: 10-15

Tasting Notes:

Cherry, currant, and dried blackberry aromas mingle among suggestions of spicy oak and gingerbread on the nose. A sip brings forth flavors of currents, black cherries, and blackberries, alongside accents of ginger, nutmeg, and toasty oak. Polished tannins, nice fruit, and a pop of brown spice make this a wine to enjoy with chicken mole.

Marques de Caceres 2014 Crianza

Grape(s): 85% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha Tinta, & 5% Graciano

Region: Rioja, Spain

Price: 10-15

Tasting Notes:

A bouquet of blackberries, raspberries, spice, and toasty oak rises up from a glass. With a sip, flavors of raspberry, raisin, and blackberry meld among undertones of brown spice and light oak. Sanity tannins frame balanced flavors, making this a good wine to open with spicy Latin dishes.

Seaglass 2017 Rose

Grape(s): 45% Grenache, 40% Syrah, & 15% Pinot Noir

Region: Monterey County, Ca

Price: 10-15

Tasting Notes:

Aromatics of raspberries, strawberries, and watermelon combine with whispers of bubble gum and wild flowers on the nose. Flavors of cherry, tart strawberry, and tropical fruit emerge on the palate, accented by notes of rose petal and bubble gum. A crisp acidity and lively flavors make this a great rose for food. Pair with grilled shrimp.

Bonny Doon “De Proprio Gravitas” White Blend

Grape(s): 61% Semillon, 35% Sauvignon Blanc, & 4% Gewurztraminer

Region: North Coast, Ca

Price: 15-20

Tasting Notes:

A mix of citrus aromas meld with elements of minerals, spring flowers, and orange peal on the nose. A sip brings forth flavors of lime, lemon, and grapefruit that flow into suggestions of wet stone, wild flowers, and vanilla. Could be mistaken for a French wine with it’s dry, crisp, minerally character. Open a bottle when serving fresh grilled white fish.
